What it does
Valkey is a high-performance key-value database maintained as an open project under the Linux Foundation. It supports familiar Redis clients and commands for caching, sessions, and messaging.
Why it’s interesting
Its event loop and storage structures make a useful systems-programming case study. Check the current compatibility and migration notes before changing production services.
Real-world use case
Run Valkey in development or CI and connect with your existing Redis client to test cache behavior.
What I can learn
- 01
Event-driven networking
inspect non-blocking socket processing.
- 02
Memory structures
understand strings, dictionaries, and sorted sets.
- 03
Cluster behavior
study slot ownership and failure handling.
One thing to explore
Networking and command loop
Follow the src implementation and connect it to the concepts above.

Try basic key-value commands
Before you start: Docker installed; port 6379 must be free.
- Start a disposable Valkey container.
- Connect using valkey-cli.
- Set a key, read it, and inspect the server information.
docker run --rm -d --name test-valkey -p 127.0.0.1:6379:6379 valkey/valkey:latestdocker exec -it test-valkey valkey-cli# SET user:status learning# GET user:status# INFO server
